Living in Port

In 1836 Surveyor General Colonel Light selected a sand hill surrounded by mangroves for the first Port. It was known to the Kaurna as Yertabulti, a place ‘of sleep or death’ and an important meeting place. Europeans transformed the landscape—mangroves were replaced with wharves, industry and infrastructure. Cycles of boom and bust shaped the Port’s history and swept the fortunes of Portonians along with them.   Read more about Living in Port >
